Mythologies. The Death of Free Speech. 1

Mythologies. The Death of Free Speech.

Thursday 21st January 2021, the story of Ms Anchan, the Thai civil servant jailed for 43 years for posting criticism on social media of the Thai Royal family, is the subject of an audio mediacast and features on this site’s Mediacast page.

This is a cautionary tale for anyone interested in the global future of free speech. In this audio consideration is given to the issue of free speech in a global context and asks to what extent it is a mythology.

Our mythologies are the beliefs which protect us from the harsh realities of the world as it really is. Should we be asking if we have ever had free speech? Should we be  considering what free speech means to us today? All of these questions are posed in the audio and left open to the critical enquiry of the audience.
